Edward McGowan was born at Chorley, Lancashire in July 1877 and served in France from 29 September 1914 with 'C' Company, 1st Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He was wounded in action - with a bullet wound to the leg - and taken a Prisoner of War in the action at La Bassee on 22 December 1914.
