(x) Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, Somaliland 1902-04 (J. Melia, Sto. H.M.S. Pomone.), about very fine

John Melia was born on 4 July 1882 and enlisted on 17 August 1901 for 12 years of service and initially served on H.M.S. Vivid II, a shore base at Devonport as a Stoker 2nd Class. In 1902, Melia medalled for his work on H.M.S. Pomone; he travelled between Aden and Berbera, transferring troops from India to take part in the Somaliland campaign of 1903. Then later, while serving on his next ship H.M.S. Proserpine, Melia was promoted to Stoker 1st Class. Having finished his 12 years of service, he then reengaged on 30 December 1915 and served on Vivid II twice, as well as aboard H.M.S. Bellephon and H.M.S. New Zealand. While stationed on Bellephon, between February - November 1916, Melia likely participated in the Battle of Jutland. He was later discharged, and on the 18 September 1917, he was awarded the Silver War Badge. He was also likely further entitled to at least British War and Victory Medals.
