(x) Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal (4171 Corpl: F. R. Nightingale, 1st Dgn Gds:), very fine
Frederick Richard Nightingale was born in 1876 in Northallerton, Yorkshire and worked as a labourer before enlisting in March 1898 into the 1st (King's) Dragoon Guards. He served at Home from 31 March 1898 to 14 January 1901 and was appointed Corporal on 9 March 1900 and officially promoted Corporal 14 August 1900. He then served in South Africa between 15 January 1901 - 23 December before serving at Home until 23 April 1903. He then transferred to the Army Reserve on 24 April 1903 and reengaged on 19 March 1910. He was then mobilised on 5 August 1914 but curiously was discharged physically unfit for further military service on 6 August 1914. He was further entitled to the South Africa 1901 clasp.
