(x) Crimea 1854-56, 3 clasps, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol (281. Corpl M. Dooley. 4/Dgn Gds), contemporarily privately engraved, very fine
Martin Dooley was born in Dublin but enlisted into the 4th Regiment, Dragoon Guards on 12 February 1828 at London aged 14 years old. His trade prior to enlisting was shirt maker. Dooley served for 23 years in the Dragoons, taking part in the famous action of the charge of the Heavy Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War in October 1954. The month prior, on 11 September, he had been promoted to Corporal. Dooley retired from service on 14 April 1855 because he was declared medically unfit after a recent injury he had sustained. He died several years later on 15 September 1888.
