The Naval General Service Medal awarded to Admiral's Servant J. Palmer, Royal Navy, who served at the right hand of Admiral Hood in the Royal George
Naval General Service 1793-1840, 2 clasps, 1 June 1794, 23rd June 1795 (John Palmer.), very fine
Just two N.G.S.M.'s listed upon the roll as Admiral's Servant, the other a single clasped award.
John Palmer is confirmed on the rolls as Admiral’s Servant aboard H.M.S. Royal George at both actions. That would place him at the right hand of the famous Admiral Alexander Hood, 1st Viscount Bridport, K.B.. On the Glorious First of June 1794, the Royal George was one of just two British rear ships who attack the enemy line, she pierced it between Républicain and Sans Pareil. Hood took a Peerage and Large Naval Gold Medal & chain for his troubles, with the ship being badly damaged, while Palmer had earned his first clasp. At the Battle of Groix on 23 June 1795 they shared in the action against the French under Rear Admiral Louis Thomas Villaret de Joyeuse off the Île de Groix and captured three ships.
