(x) The Australian National Medal awarded to Flight Sergeant K. M. Slattery, Royal Australian Air Force, who took part in the Maralinga Atomic Tests

Australia, National Medal (K.M. Slattery A1506), in its Royal Australian Mint case of issue, with riband bar and corresponding dress miniature, good very fine

Kevin Matthew Slattery was born at Townsville, Queensland on 21 March 1927 and enlisted with the Royal Australian Air Force at Brisbane on 1 May 1945. He was trained at 2 School of Technical Training, Canberra but discharged in September after the end of the Second World War. Re-enlisting in September 1946 he saw service in Indonesia and New Guinea before embarking for Malya on 12 April 1947 (General Service Medal and Clasp, Malaya).

Advanced Flight Sergeant with No 7 Stores Depot on 11 January 1961 and two years later he joined the Maralinga Atomic Research Support Unit on 14 January 1963. At this stage the major tests had concluded however research was still being undertaken in several smaller tests referred to as the 'minor trails'. Slattery would likely have been working to support these as well as the clean-up efforts which were undertaken after research conducted at Maralinga uncovered the long term dangers of Nuclear Fallout.

Leaving the next year he was posted to R.A.A.F. Laverton and later R.A.A.F. Amberley in 1968, he was discharged there in 1976; sold together with copied research.
