David Wighton Herd was born at Dysart, Fife on 21 December 1884. He first served overseas in France on 8 December 1915 as No.76 with the Machine Gun Corps (Motors) and was both 'mentioned' as well as being awarded an M.S.M. to the unit. He was commissioned into the Tank Corps on 30 November 1917 and in turn was awarded a Military Cross in the King's birthday honours of June 1919. He died at Scarborough, Yorkshire on 30 September 1957.
Sold together with his wrist watch by J. W. Benson, London. A 9ct gold cushion shape cased gentleman's wristwatch, with a signed jewelled lever movement, the enamelled dial (cracked) with Arabic numerals and subsidiary seconds, the strap part replaced but still with original section housed in J. W. Benson Ltd case of issue.
