Army L.S. & G.C., V.R. (2908. Pte. M. J. Bower. R. Sc: Fus.), engraved light contact marks very fine
Matthew James Bower was born at St.Luke's, Birmingham, Warwickshire in 1860. He enlisted at Walsall on 2 January 1879 for 61st Brigade and was given the number 2023. He embarked for South Africa on 3 November 1880 and after serving there went to serve in the East Indies and arrived there on 4 January 1882. It is here where he was entitled to an India General Service 1854-95 medal with clasp, Burma 1885-87. Bower completed 21 years at Nowshera on 16 June 1890 and appears to be renumbered as 2908. He returned to the U.K. on 29 November 1896 and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1897. With the outbreak of the Second Boer War, he embarked for South Africa on 23 October 1899. He returned to the U.K. on 22 December 1900 and was discharged on the 6 January 1901 at Ayr, Scotland after 22 yrs 5 months service, his conduct was considered as "exemplary" and he gave the address of 2 Sawyers Cottages, High St, Old Brompton, Chatham. It was further noted that Bower "Has been employed as waiter in the officers mess for about 16 years".
