Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 1st issue, large letter reverse (John Swift, Serjeant 9th Lancers. 1845), fitted with original steel clip suspension, edge bruising, very fine

John Swift enlisted at the age of 15 with the 9th Dragoons- the precursor to the 9th Lancers- on 13 April 1816 at their headquarters. Notably a Corporal Mathew Swift had been serving with the unit for some time, suggesting that the younger Swift was a relative. Reaching his majority and the rank of Private by early 1819 he advanced Sergeant in 1841 and was serving in Ireland on recruiting duties the next year. Hospitalised in 1845 he was invalided from service on 15 May 1845, being discharged to a pension; sold together with hand written research.
