Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R. (J. G. Mays. Eng. Rm. Artifr H.M.S. Cygnet), officially impressed very fine
John George Mays was born at Shoreditch, London on 14 June 1842 and was a fitter by trade. He joined the Royal Naval as an Acting Engine Room Artificer on 12 June 1868 and served on Indus before seeing service in North America and West Indies on Liffey from 14 June 1869. He briefly returned Home on 30 November 1870 but was sent back to the same theatre this time on Plover. Mays returned Home on 21 December 1873 and then served on Indus and Ganges and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. on 7 September 1878 before setting off for the West Coast of Africa and the Mediterranean on 22 April 1879 on Cygnet. Mays returned Home on 8 July 1879 where he remained before heading to China this time on Merlin on 7 May 1883 until 26 July 1886 when he returned to serve back on Indus between 27 July 1886 - 2 April 1887. Mays served on Vernon between 28 April 1887 - 27 May 1887 before a final stint on Indus from 28 May 1887 until he was discharged on 12 June 1888. Mays died in 1902, and the medal offered here is his sole entitlement.
