A 1915 Neuve Chapelle D.C.M. awarded to Company Serjeant Major T. Groggins, 2nd Border Regiment

Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (9284 C.S.Mjr: T. Groggins. 2/Bord: Regt.), pitting, very fine

D.C.M. London Gazette 23 June 1915, the original citation states:

'For conspicuous ability and devotion to duty at Neuve Chapelle, from 10th to 14th March, 1915, when he commanded his company after his Officers were wounded. He himself was also wounded.'

Thomas Groggins entered the Western Theatre of the Great War with his Regiment on 5 October 1914, thus qualifying for the 1914 Star. Groggins was apparently wounded at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in France in March 1915. He was subsequently awarded the D.C.M. for commanding the Company in this state, after his officers were wounded. His commanding officer's original recommendation follows:

"This NCO, after his Officers had been wounded handled his Company exceptionally well - I especially noticed this NCO - He also got his men well together against a counter attack and showed good leadership."

The award was gazetted on 23 June 1915. Groggins was at some stage advanced Acting Warrant Officer First Class and transferred to the 7th Border Regiment. He is further entitled to a 1914 Star Trio; sold together with copied research.
