Distinguished Service Medal, G.VI.R. (A.B. J. McInally. C/JX.218037), edge bruise, light contact wear, very fine
D.S.M. London Gazette 1 August 1944, the original recommendation states:
'Has served with M.L. 100 on approximately 35 minelaying operations in enemy waters, displaying at all times great coolness, and presence of mind. Is a very good seaman, and his keenness an inspiration to others.'
John McInally was a native of Glasgow served with the Coastal Forces on the books of H.M.S. Beehive during the Second World War. He was stationed with Motor Launch 100, initially serving with coastal escort work she was converted to minelaying in 1941. McInally's award was richly deserved as the supporting recommendation from Admiral Tovey notes adding:
'Forwarded, strongly concurring in these recommendations.
I am intentionally sending them in for consideration as operational awards.
2. Although minelayers are always instructed to avoid action, they run rather heavier risks than forces seeking action and their operations call for an equally high standard of skill, courage and leadership.'
