George Henry Double was born in Gorleston, Suffolk on 11 September 1889 to George and Mary Ann Double. He enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve on 20 April 1917, at which time he and his wife Alice Maude Double were living at 22 Somerset St. in Hull. Double had earlier earned a Fishing Skipper certificate on 5 September 1913.

Double was advanced Acting Skipper on 12 October 1917 and later received the D.S.M. for his service aboard H.M. Trawler Triton in minesweeping operations in the Mediterranean in 1918.

He was later dispersed to shore on demobilisation on 20 August 1919 from H.M.S. President III to Hull. He appears on the medal roll with the rank of Skipper. Double is further entitled to a British War and Victory Medal pair; sold together with copied research.
