Ernest John Howe was born on 24 August 1906 and enlisted at Sheerness on 26 November 1920 into the Royal Garrison Artillery. He served in China between 6 February 1927 - 14 February 1928 and returned Home after this service. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal (AO/75) in 1939. Howe had worked at the Military College of Science for 3 1/2 years as a Military Instructor in Fitting and M.T. Vehicle Repairs. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant on 18 July 1941. He transferred to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and was promoted to Captain on 1 January 1949 and was granted the honorary rank of Major.
