Kenneth Herbert Kay was born on 22 April 1918 and listed his address as the Modderfontein Dynamite Factory upon his joining the South African Air Force in January 1940, when he was posted as 2nd Lieutenant in July 1940. Having gone to No. 1 Air School that December, he was made Lieutenant in January 1941 and Captain from October 1942.

During the course of the Second World War, Kay flew with No. 60 Squadron from July 1943-June 1944 in North Africa and Italy. In 1943 the 60th Squadron was a part of the North African Photo Reconnaissance Wing, which later became the Mediterranean Allied Photo Reconnaissance Wing. In several flights during 1944 Mosquitos took many of the later-discussed pictures of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camps, in which the Holocaust was visible but was not recognised. Kay was released in September 1946, by that time having flown 22 types of aircraft.
