1939-1945 Star; Pacific Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Army L.S. & G.C., G.VI.R., Regular Army (7575901 Cpl. H. J. Bellenger. R.A.O.C.,), good very fine (5)
Harry James Bellenger was born at Berkshire on 14 April 1904, he enlisted on 17 November 1919 and by the outbreak of the Second World War was serving as a Sergeant with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. He was in Malaya when the men of the R.A.O.C. were reclassified as a 'combatant' corps, thus placing them on the frontline when the Japanese arrived at Singapore. These men fought alongside the Malay Regiment and went 'in the bag' when the city fell on 15 February 1942, Bellenger appears to have been amongst their number.
He was taken initially to Changi Camp, one of the main staging areas for work upon the Burma Railway. A camp document places him at Camp 4, Kanburi at some stage although Bellenger's Liberation Questionnaire has him between Changi and Kranji for the duration of his time of the railway. Surviving the ordeal, he was released on 2 September 1945; sold together with copied research.
