Walter Henry Biggs was born at Neath, South Wales on 2 August 1913. He joined the Royal Air Force on 8 July 1940 and saw service in the Far Eastern theatre from 1 June 1941. He was captured at Java on 1 September 1942 (although in his P.O.W. questionnaire he states the date of capture as 8 May 1942. Released from captivity on 2 September 1945. Biggs was released from the R.A.F. on 19 August 1946.

Telegram dated 17 March 1943 sent to Mrs D M Biggs (wife) of 11A Belfield Road, West Ewell, Surrey, confirming that he was a POW in Japanese hands.
