Alyn Everard Rans was born on 4 November 1915 at Bangalore, his father being a veteran of the Leicestershire Regiment and Coorg & Mysore Volunteer Rifles. Young Rans joined the Royal Air Force as an Aircraft Apprentice with the 26th Entry at RAF Halton in September 1932 and was posted to No. 2 Wing in August 1935. A fine pugilist, he took a Barrington Kennett Medal and the RAF Boxing Association Silver Medal.

Appointed Aircraftman 1st Class in August 1935, he served with 6 Squadron in Palestine (Medal & clasp). Posted home in October 1938, he was with 1 (Fighter) Squadron at Tangmere, being posted to No. 5 Wing at Halton from April 1939. He was posted to No. 217 Squadron in September 1939, a unit of Coastal Command. His health suffering, he was eventually posted to 96th General Hospital in July 1943, being released from service in August 1945. Rans died at Southampton in 1978.
