W. Doyle is noted as joining the Army Reserve after his service in the Northwest Frontier. He was presumably mobilised for service again during the Second World War and was posted to the 1st Battalion at some stage prior to the Battle of Crete. There they were initially stationed at Tymbaki by being ordered to move to Heraklion airfield in support of the embattled 14th Infantry Brigade. The bulk of the unit was successfully evacuated however Doyle was not amongst them having been wounded and taken prisoner of war. His name appears upon a casualty list cover the month of November 1943 which states he had been repatriated, possibly during the Allied advance into Italy.
