William Bruce was born at Chatham, Kent on 1 July 1900, he was previously a Baker before he joined the Royal Navy on 1 July 1918 as a Cook's Mate for twelve years initially and served on Pembroke I from 1 July 1918-26 March 1919. Joinig Emperor of India from 7 March 1919-19 November 1920, this ship included service in Russia providing gunfire whilst evacuating White Russians, which is where he earned his Great War pair and later the ship observed the Greco-Turkish War, receiving a war gratuity for this ship. Advanced Assistant Cook on 17 May 1919 and Cook on 10 June 1919, Bruce took his L.S. & G.C. in July 1933. Promoted Leading Cook 10 November 1936, he served on Emerald and continued his service up to the Second World War when he was serving on Ganges until 5 April 1940 when he saw service on Pembroke 2 and saw service on Eaglet, Fenet, Philoctetes, Orlando, President V and finally Beehive from 6 November 1944 which he was discharged from on 17 September 1945 with the rank of Leading Cook.
