(x) Pair: Private W. Gibb, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders
British War and Victory Medals (9253 Pte. W. Gibb. Cam'n Highrs.), medals heavily polished but otherwise very fine (2)
William Gibb joined the First World War on 14 August 1914 as a part of the 1st Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders and was likely sent to the Western Front. Gibb likely fought in battles such as the Battle of Mons, Marne, the First Battle of Ypres and the Battle of Loos. The 1st Battalion was key in the seizure of two German trench lines. When they advanced to the third German line on the outskirts of Hulloch village, reinforcements did not arrive, forcing the battalion to withdraw. While the battalion was successful in capturing two German field guns and three machine guns, it sustained severe losses: 17 officers and 369 men were killed, wounded or missing. It was after the Battle of Loos, on 28 September 1915, that Gibb was killed in action. He was buried in Ninth Avenue Cemetery, Haisnes.
