Joseph Mitchell was born at Newcastle, son of Mrs Alice Mitchell of 391 Shields Road, Heaton, Newcastle-on-Tyne. He enlisted there, being posted to the 1/4th Battalion, Shropshire Light Infantry but was killed in action on 11 April 1918. Mitchell is commemorated upon the Tyne Cot Memorial.
