John Valentine Harker was born in 1887 at Kings Cliffe, Northamptonshire and worked on the railways. In April 1914 he had been married to Sarah Sauntson at Oundle. During the Great War he served in France with the 1st Battalion, The Queens Regiment (Pair only). The unit shared in the costly actions around Geluveldt on 25-26 September 1917, the butchers bill totalling some 14 Officers & 387 other ranks killed, wounded and missing. Harker was killed in action and is commemorated upon the Tyne Cot Memorial and was survived by his widow, besides an infant son and daughter.
