John McMillan was born in Kingston, Glasgow, on 4 January 1896 and joined the Royal Naval Air Service for the duration of hostilities on 16 November 1915, serving with the Royal Naval Air Service Armoured Car Division in Russia from June 1916 - the Service Record noting that he was seconded for 'Service Land Operations'. That unit shared in the Battle of Panteleimon Ustin in Romania in December 1916, when led by Lieutenant Ingle, the Armoured Cars fought alongside Romanian forces against the Central Powers. The diary of Petty Officer Gerald Smyth is available via https://researchportal.northumbria.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles/portal/13489668/Armoured_Cars_WIH.pdf; sold together with copied record of service and medal roll extract, which confirms that the recipient was not entitled to a 1914-15 Star.
