Harold Holden was born at Rochdale and enlisted there for the 6th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry. He entered the war in France on 24 July 1915 and served with the Battalion in France, seeing action at the Battle of Loos in 1915 and Mount Sorrel in 1916.

On the Somme Offensive they saw action on the Serre before being stationed at Guillemont in September. They went into action at Watercourt Farm and it was there that Holden was killed in action on 17 September. He is buried at Serre Road Cemetery No.2; sold together with copied research.
