Three: Captain C. B. Tugwell, Dorset Regiment who had previously been awarded an Order of Medjidieh for his service in the Egyptian Government and who died of wounds on 28 March 1917

Claude Buchanan Tugwell was born on 9 May 1863 at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, and was the son of the Rev. L. G. Tugwell and Mrs. H. L. Tugwell and was the husband of Constance Tugwell. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant from the Militia into the 1st Battalion Dorset Regiment on 5 May 1885. Promoted Captain 1892, he was then seconded to the Egyptian Constabulary London Gazette 10 May 1892 until October 1899, it was here that he was awarded the Order of Medjidieh London Gazette 30 July 1895. With the outbreak of the Second Boer War Tugwell joined the Reserve of Officers, retaining his previous rank of Captain, he then transferred to the 2nd Battalion Dorset Regiment. During the war he was present in the operations in the Relief of Ladysmith 17-24 January 1900; at the action at Spion Kop 5-7 February 1900; Vaal Kranz, operations on Tugela Heights 14-27 February 1900; and the action at Pieters Hill. He served in Natal between March - June 1900 including the action at Laing's Nek 6-9 June; in the Transvaal and Orange River Colony, June 1900. Tugwell retired from the army at the end of the conflict. On his return to the U.K. Tugwell was married to Constance in 1903 and they were to live at 39 Stanwick Mansions, Stanwick Road, Fulham.

With the outbreak of the Great War he was brought back for military service on 19 September 1914 and by 1915 was serving as Deputy Adjutant and Quartermaster General at Colchester, Essex. However, this posting was short lived as he was sent to Sierra Leone in 1916 and served as part of the Staff. He returned to the U.K. on 13 August 1916 landing at Liverpool on the Karina

On 24 January 1917, he was appointed Deputy Asst Adjutant and Quarter Master General. Tugwell died at the Queen Alexander Military Hospital, Millbank Westminster, London on 28 March 1917 from wounds and an infection which he had suffered in Sierra Leone and is buried in Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey. His widow applied for his British War Medal (not present) which was his sole entitlement on 4 October 1922, and this was sent to her at 18 St.Marks Court, Abercorne Place, London N.W.8.
