Harry Chandler was born at Cheam, Ewell, Surrey in 1876 and attested at London on 31 December 1894. Posted abroad for the first time he was posted to Gibraltar on 12 January 1898, returning to Britain on 22 March 1899.
Entering the war in South Africa on 24 November 1899 they saw heavy fighting at Paardeberg, with over 30 men killed and 100 wounded in action during the fighting. Chandler remained in the country until 11 September 1902 when he returned to Britain and transferred to the Army Reserve on 15 October 1902 and discharged on 30 December 1906.
