Naval General Service 1915-62, 1 clasp, Minesweeping 1945-51 (Ty Sub Lt D K Osbourne RNVR), light contact marks, good very fine
D. K. Osborne served as Third Officer as Temporary Sub-Lieutenant, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve aboard the Fairmile Class B ML-250 from March 1946. Forming part of the Coastal Forces, it had Lieutenant Frank George Fuller D.S.C., R.N.V.R. as the Skipper, who was also Senior Officer, 20th Motor Launch Flotilla from October 1945.
The vessel herself had an interesting Second World War after being launched in July 1941. She was leant to Les Forces Navales Françaises Libres (FNFL) from May-August 1942, during which period it was renamed Ouessant. ML-250 then shared in Operation Postage Able, the top-secret Combined Operations Assault Pilotage Parties mission to survey ahead of Operation Overlord. With ML-190, she escorted the midget submarine X-20 and HMT Darthema during the initial stages of Operation Postage Able in January 1944. She also picked up some 30 survivors from the Glendinning, torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-763 about 20 nautical miles south-east of Selsey Bill on 5 July 1944.
