The Mercantile Marine medal awarded to 3rd Engineer G. A. Mounsey, Merchant Marine, who was killed in action during the sinking of the Roxburgh in 1918
Mercantile Marine War Medal 1914-18 (George A. Mounsey), nearly extremely fine
George Alwyn Mounsey was born at Keswick, Cumberland in 1883, the son of George and Elizabeth Mounsey. Living in Hartlepool by 1901 he joined the Merchant Marine and was serving with them during the Great War. Mounsey was serving with the steamer Roxburgh in 1918 which, in March of that year, was carrying a cargo of barley between Karachi and Salonica. He was working in the Engine Room on 5 March 1918 when she was torpedoed by UC-74 while the ship was some 15 miles from Cape St. John, Crete. Mounsey died during the attack, he was last seen in the Engine Room and it seems likely that he never made it out, becoming trapped and going down with the ship. He was 1 of 6 of the crew to die in the attack. His Mercantile Marine Medal was issued to his family on 11 January 1923.
