Samuel Richard Merredy was born circa 1888 and resided in Birmingham, where he worked as a dipper. Less than a year before the outbreak of the Great War he was married to Sarah Ann Shaw at the Immanuel Parish Church, and together the couple resided at 66 William Street in Edgbaston. The newlyweds were separated by the war, which saw Merredy enlist with the Shropshire Light Infantry and serve as a Private in the 1st Battalion. He and his unit were disembarked at the Western Front on 10 September 1914 and the following year he spent some time at No. 9 Stationary Hospital at Havre in for sickness, being discharged on 22 March. A few months later, Merredy was tragically killed in action on the Western Front on 9 August and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres. The widowed Sarah Ann claimed her husband's pension. Merredy is further entitled to a 1914 Star and a British Victory medal; sold together with copied research.

William Appleby first enlisted as a Private in the Durham Light Infantry, with whom he served under regimental number 3380, but at an unknown date transferred to the Royal Field Artillery, serving as a Gunner and with regimental number 232325. He and his unit were disembarked at the Western Front on 12 October 1915. Appleby survived the war and was discharged on 8 April 1919 and was further entitled to a British War and Victory Medal pair; sold together with copied research.
