The India General Service Medal awarded to Bombardier W. Davis, 18th Battery, Royal Field Artillery, who died in service at Nowshera on 5 January 1911

William Davis was born at Manchester in 1875 and enlisted there on 10 May 1893. He was posted to India on 7 December 1896 with the 15th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. There he took part in the expeditions on the Punjab Frontier and the Samana expedition of 1897 with the 31st Battery. Moving on to take part in the Tirah expedition which lasted into the next year Davis was advanced Bombardier on 21 June 1899.

Returning to Britain on 25 March 1905 he reverted to Gunner whilst there before being posted back to India with the 18th Battery on 19 October 1906. There he took part in operations on the Northwest Frontier in 1908, remaining in India for the rest of his career. Davis was stationed at Nowshera on the Northwest Frontier in 1911 and died there of 'inflammation of the membranes of the brain' on 5 January; sold together with copied research.
