The Rifle Brigade arrived in South Africa in early 1902 and was involved in operations in the Orange River Colony, particularly around Harrismith, contributing to successful 'drives' by holding blockhouse lines.

Palmer was one of the unlucky ones to succumb to Enteric fever on 13 June 1902 at Kroonstad South Africa.
