(x) India General Service 1895-1908, 2 clasps, Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Tirah 1897-97 (3398. Pte J. Drew, Devon Regt) renamed, about very fine

James Drew was born in Crediton, Devonshire in circa 1873. He enlisted to join the Army in 1891 and served with the 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment during the Second Boer War. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with Transvaal and Defence of Ladysmith clasps. He remained in South Africa and was also awarded the King's South Africa Medal with 1901 and 1902 clasps.

It is then likely that Drew later served with the 4th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment from 28 June 1908. Upon the outbreak of the First World War, he was sent to the Western Front on 6 November 1914. He served for a further three years before he was discharged under clause 'XVI T of E 43. (b) 1', standing for 'termination of engagement', likely due to his age of 43 years old. He was awarded the Silver War Badge on 8 March 1918.
