Charles Lanyon Owen was born at Devonport in 1839 and was commissioned into the Royal Marines Light Infantry in May 1855. Having been wrecked in the Raleigh in April 1857, he shared in the operations in the Second Opium War, particularly in the destruction of two war junks at Escape and Fasthan. A member of the Macao Fort garrison, Owen then shared in the capture of Canton, being 'mentioned' for his troubles.
Having reached Captain by August 1867, he went on Half Pay in February 1869. He was made Major in the Hampshire Rifle Volunteers in May 1869 and then served with the Hampshire Artillery Volunteers, being Colonel by 1881. A Magistrate for Portsmouth, he died on 29 November 1914; sold together with a CD containing roll extracts confirming Medal marked as 'R'.
