Jellalabad 1842 (Pt Thos Glover XIII. P. A. L. I.), fitted with replacement bar suspension, contact marks and edge bruising, nearly very fine
Thomas Glover was born at St. Mary's, Westmeath around 1806 and attested with the 13th Regiment of Foot on 20 March 1826 at Tullamore. He served most of his twenty-year career in India spending a total of 18 years and two months there. During this time, he was present for the First-Anglo Afghan War, seeing action at the capture of Ghuznee (medal) and Cabul (medal).
The Regiment was part of a column commanded by Robert "Fighting Bob" Sale which was conducting operations near Jellalabad when the country rose against the British. They were forced to retreat to the town where they held out for some time before successfully breaking the siege of Akbar Khan's forces. They were lucky to have survived the fate which befell a large portion of the Army of the Indus in the passes below Kabul.
Glover had been promoted and demoted several times throughout his career but during the early stages of the war he was serving as a Corporal before being reduced for the final time to Private on 24 December 1842. He was discharged on 8 September 1846 and was noted as suffering health problems as a result of his service in Afghanistan; sold together with copied service papers.
