Naval General Service 1793-1840, 1 clasp, Syria (James Scowcroft.), some heavy edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise very fine
James Scowcroft is a unique name upon the roll.
Scowcroft was born in Little Leaver, Bolton, Manchester and later attested for the Royal Marines at Woolwich. He served as a Sergeant during the Syria campaign and was stationed on board 36-gun fifth rate frigate H.M.S. Pique. During the Syria campaign, Pique was under the command of Captain Edward Boxer and was part of Admiral Robert Stopford's fleet. At the bombardment of Acre in 1840, Pique was positioned relatively far from the city itself at the northern end of the line of Stopford's fleet. Regardless of the distance, thanks to the accuracy of her guns several of Pique's shot still found their mark on the city's walls. In the years following Syria and the Mediterranean, Pique served at the North America and West Indies station - though it is unknown if Scowcroft was with her at this time. A few years later on 30 January 1843 Scowcroft, then a Colour Sergeant in the Royal Marines and also a widower, was married to Miss Hannah Jane Marshall at St. Luke's Church in Charlton. He was discharged to pension after a 21-year career with the Royal Marines after which he returned to Bolton, where he died in 1879 and was interred at Tonge Cemetery; sold together with copied research.
