Headquarters, Seventh U.S. Army, General Orders No. 135, 9 April 1945. The original citation reads as follows:
'The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Kenneth G. Welker (ASN: 37406714), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 142nd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Oberhoffen, France, on 11 February 1945. Private Welker’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army'.
Kenneth Glen Welker was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on 24 July 1923. At some stage he joined the United States Army and served overseas in the Second World War as a Private in the 36th Infantry Division. When with F Company he completed an act of valour whilst engaged with German forces in France on 11 February 1945, resulting in Welker's award of the United States' second highest military honour.
Welker also served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, eventually retiring from the service with the rank of Sergeant First Class. He later married Anna Raab and they had issue of a son and a daughter. Welker died in Buchanan, Tennessee on 20 June 1989 following a short illness and was interred at the New Liberty Church Cemetery in Buchanan.
Welker was further entitled to a Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, and a Combat Infantryman Badge; sold together with copied research.
