Stephen James Daughtrey was born at Southampton on 25 July 1895 and enlisted on 11 June 1912. He was serving with Neptune on the outbreak of the Great War and was aboard her when she rammed and sank SM U-29. Joining the Q-ship Begonia in November 1915 he remained with her until April 1916 before transferring to King George V. He spent the rest of the war with her and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve 25 July 1925.
