William Crosland was born at Headingley, Leeds, on 22 December 1895. He attested into the Royal Field Artillery (96121) on 1 September 1914 and entered the war in France on 11 May 1915. Crosland served with the Royal Army Medical Corps (144218) from 29 August 1918 - 26 January 1919. He briefly served as a Butcher for a firm based in Harrogate between March 1920 - July 1921 before joining the Royal Air Force on 16 August 1921 at R.A.F. Uxbridge enlisting as an A.C.II. He saw service with 'M' Squadron based at R.A.F. Iraq from 19 September 1924 before going to India on 1 January 1927, and then on to serve between Lahore and Karachi until 18 May 1929 (no squadron mentioned). Crosland had the trade of Cook and Butcher throughout his R.A.F. service, and reached the rank of Temporary Sergeant on 1 January 1928.
He is further entitled to a 1914-15 Star Trio.
