William Bond was born at Fleetwood, Lancashire and was employed in seafaring prior to him joining the Royal Navy with the outbreak of the Second World War.
Sheldrake was built in 1937 and was classed as a Patrol Vessel or Corvette. She was involved in an attack on E-Boat S30 close to the Kwinte Whistle Buoy, near the Dover Strait on 29 May 1940. This particular E-Boat had sunk Wakeful in the early hours of the morning of 29 May with the loss of over 600 troops. The publication The Navy Day by Day stated that this E-Boat was sunk however this is not the case. Sheldrake saw further action in the North Sea in March 1943 and May 1944. She was sold out of the Royal Navy in 1946.
In addition to the D.S.M. awarded to Bond, a further two M.I.D.s were gazetted on 1 January 1941 to a Petty Officer A. E. Jackson and a Lieutenant H. W. M. Rose; sold with a newspaper cutting announcing the award of the D.S.M.
