George Sidney Chisman/Chesman was born at Poole, Dorset on 3 September 1891 and served with the Mercantile Marine (No. 476085) and Marine Fleet Auxiliary during the Great War.

His awards were all won on the Verdun II. She was launched by Fairfield Govan, in June 1888 as Paris, a cross channel Paddle Steamer for the London Brighton & South Coast Railway. During wartime, she had been requisitioned by the Admiralty for conversion to a Minesweeper in March 1916. She became Verdun II after the name was given to a destroyer. She was armed with a single 6-pounder anti-aircraft gun. The vessel was scrapped in 1924 at Upnor in the River Medway.
