John Waring was born on 12 October 1881 and commissioned Lieutenant in October 1902. Serving in the rank of Captain on the outbreak of the Great War he entered the war in France on 9 December 1914. Advanced Major in France on 30 December 1915 he was awarded the D.S.O. while serving in France, a newspaper article makes reference to him, stating:
'His uncle is General Sir John Woon, K.C.B.; another uncle is Major in the South African Irish Regiment; a third is Captain Harry Woon, author of "twenty-five years' Soldiering in South Africa." Yet another soldier uncle is Colonel John Waring, D.S.O., of the Gunners serving in France.'
Appointed Brigade Major, attached to the Royal Artillery Headquarters on 8 April 1916, Waring received a 'mention' to go with his decoration whilst there. He was promoted Lieutenant Colonel on 13 April 1917 and returned to his original establishment on 1 May. Waring's medals were sent care of Cox & Co., 16 Charing Cross, London; sold together with copied research.
