After a period of training Trevor was posted to the 7th Field Squadron at Brisbane on 20 April 1962 and 2nd Field Troop on 29 May 1963.
2 Field Troop RAE was raised in 1963 as part of Australia's contribution to the Far East Strategic Reserve, which aimed to counter Communist aggression in Southeast Asia. The Troop was deployed to Malaysia and came under the command of 11 Independent Field Squadron, Royal Engineers, as part of 28 Commonwealth Brigade. 2 Field Troop replaced previous Australian engineer troops that had been deployed to Malaysia since 1955. The Troop's posting was part of Australia's support for the newly formed Federation of Malaysia against hostility from Indonesia.
