With the outbreak of the Second World War, McCrossen served in France with the 1/6th Battalion, The Queen's Regiment and was wounded in action. The wounds were so severe that he was classed 'permanently unfit' in August 1940 and then joined the 16th (Bermondsey) Battalion, Home Guard. His campaign awards (1939-45 Star & War Medal 1939-45) were issued to him at 27 Rockley Road, Bermondsey in January 1950, with his Defence Medal 1939-45 having followed sometime after. McCrossed died in February 1984.
