Frederick William John Spencer was born at Neath, Glamorgan on 26 February 1921 and attested with the Royal Artillery on 24 April 1939. Embodied initially with 322 Battery on 2 September 1939 he was posted to the 57th A.A. Brigade in November and from thence to 217 Battery, 72nd Regiment the next day.
Spencer entered the war in Africa with that unit on 4 November 1942 he served there in the rank of Gunner until 1944. Switching to an infantry role with the 5th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment on 27 July 1944 he transferred to the 6th Battalion in September when they were stationed in Italy. He doubtless saw action with them during the fighting on the Gothic Line. Not long after that ended Spencer joined the Royal Army Service Corps in May 1945. serving with them for the rest of the war.
Demobilised in April 1946 Spencer's medals were sent to him at 25 Burnside, Neath, South Wales. He settled in Middlesbrough where he began to work as a Rigger in the local ironworks. Unfortunately he did not have long left to live, dying at North Ormesby Hospital on 6 July 1958 of Hodgkin's Lymphoma; sold together with copied research including service papers and a copied death certificate.
