Frederick Dawson Byrne was commissioned into the 3/8th Battalion on 23 December 1915 and entered the war in France in July 1916, he is noted in the regimental history as joining at Bellacourt with several other junior officers. Byrne was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 July 1917 and was attached to the 12th Battalion Rifle Brigade. He applied for his medals in 1921 and they were sent to him C/O Grace Brothers, Genoa, Italy.
