William Edward Lockwood was born in at Huddersfield in 1897, the son of Albert and Mary Eliza Lockwood, 2 Upper Brow Road, Paddock. He initially served with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (No. 43320) and then the 7th Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment in France after the start of 1916 (Pair only).
At 0445hrs on 21 March 1918, his unit came under an intense enemy barrage on what would be the first day of the German Spring Offensive. They lost two Officers, 10 other ranks killed, 28 wounded, plus 14 missing. Lockwood was killed in action and is commemorated upon the Pozieres Memorial. Two days later, Christopher Bushell earned a Victoria Cross for the Regiment.
Lockwood is further commemorated upon the Huddersfield Roll of Honour and his parish church memorial.
