Harry Jackson was born at Rillington, Yorkshire, on 4 November 1894. He had been a motor mechanic and driver prior to his enlistment into the Royal Naval Air Service as an Air Mechanic on 9 December 1914 and joined Pembroke III. He transferred to President II on 1 April 1915 and was promoted to Petty Officer Mechanical on 25 June.

He was further promoted to Air Mechanic I on 11 October 1915 and completed his service with President II on 13 August 1917 when he transferred to Pegasus (aircraft carrier/seaplane carrier) on 14 August 1917 and served on that ship until 31 March 1918. Jackson transferred to the Royal Air Force as a Fitter (Aero Engine) with the rank of Corporal (Mechanic). His 'mention' appeared in the London Gazette of 3 June 1919 and was noted as 'Coast Patrol'; sold with copied reearch.
