Charles Edward Homan was born at London on 24 January 1882 and was mobilised upon the outbreak of the Great War, serving initially as a 1st Officer. Commissioned Sub Lieutenant on 22 November 1915 he served initially with the R.F.A. Polshannon, a water tank carrier. Early the next year Homan applied for a transfer to more general services however this was refused, instead he was commissioned Lieutenant on 15 May 1917.
Successfully applying for general services in 1918 he was posted to the shore base Excellent but remained with her until the end of the war. Homan was posted to the Hunt-class minesweeper Havant in April 1919, remaining with her until his demobilisation on 31 January 1920. His service papers note his address at the time as Burly, Kingswood, Hampshire. Homan's son Sub Lieutenant John Richard Seymour Homan was heavily decorated for his services with Arctic Convoys during the Second World War (the medals sold in these rooms in April 2025); sold together with copied research.
