Alfred Barker was born at Edmonton, London in 1883 and attested on 22 July 1898 and appointed Drummer with 2nd Battalion not long later on 4 January 1899. Posted to South Africa on 2 December 1899 they went into action on the Tugela Heights, being part of the disastrous Battle of Laing's Nek on 23-24 January.
They saw further action on the Tugela and the advance to Ladysmith and Pretoria before being divided between Columns for the rest of the war. Barker left South Africa on 16 February 1903 and advanced Lance Corporal on 1 January 1906. Further advanced Corporal the next year he was discharged on 20 June 1910.
